The Dog Days of Summer community art project is designed to delight
animal and art enthusiasts of all ages. This sculpture exhibit
builds upon the tremendous success of the previous public art
projects, Hog Wild in 2003, and Frog Follies in 2005.
Dog
Days of Summer is co-presented by the Art Museum of Greater
Lafayette and the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University.
These dog sculptures provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate
the School of Veterinary Medicine’s 50th anniversary and
the Art Museum’s 100th anniversary.
This public art project also builds upon the School of Veterinary
Medicine’s outdoor sculpture “Continuum,” by
Larry Anderson, which features a dog as part of its array of people
and animals in a depiction of the enduring human-animal bond.
Through the Dog Days of Summer project, the painted dog sculptures
placed around Purdue University, Lafayette and West Lafayette,
and potentially other locations in the state, will further highlight
the role which animals play in the important intersections between
animals and people, and art and science.
Various
contests and dog related events are planned as part of Dog Days
of Summer and will run from spring of 2009 thru fall of 2009.
Many of the dogs will be auctioned off at the Gala Auction on
October 4, 2009.
All
proceeds benefit the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette and the
Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine 50th Anniversary
Scholarship Fund and the Good Samaritan Fund.

Due to theft and vandalism, the dogs that
were originally located on the Purdue University campus have
been relocated inside buildings on the Purdue campus. The new,
indoor locations are generally right next to where the dogs
were originally located outside. Supplementary maps showing
the new indoor locations can be found at the Art Museum and
at the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue. A few other
dogs are still being repaired and will be replaced as soon as
possible.
